The Age of AI: A Crisis of Meaning
When machines automate production, what coordinates society? When work disappears, what provides meaning?
The Infinite Self is about extending one person: using tools and intelligence to amplify what you can do. This essay is about what happens when everyone can, and the ground that employment used to provide gives way.
The Coming Challenges
- Work. AI dissolves the link between labor and livelihood.
- Power. Corporations and governments consolidate control faster than ever.
- Purpose. People lose the identity, recognition, and belonging that employment traditionally provided.
- Community. Civic institutions continue to erode.
None of these is a prediction about the distant future. Each is already visible in the job market, in middle management, and in the business of one.
The Response
The answer is not to slow the machines down. It is to make contribution visible and meaning organizable beyond employment alone: recognition alongside pay, purpose alongside profit, community alongside management.
Two things have to be true for that to work. Individuals have to be augmented rather than replaced, which is the whole project of the Infinite Self: becoming an exponential human rather than waiting to be replaced by people who use AI. And the augmentation has to be shared, so that compute and capability do not concentrate in a few hands, which is the project of the Collective Self.
Human-Machine Partnership
Shared compute and human creativity can power open systems for education, sustainability, research, and exploration. The goal is to advance collective intelligence, human and machine together, in service of life. Not machines instead of people, and not a few people owning the machines: many people, each more capable than before, coordinating with each other.
A living network whose expansion inherently decentralizes power becomes a kind of immune system for civilization: a defense against authoritarian and monopolistic drift, in an age when both have better tools than they have ever had.
The Choice
In the age of AI, we no longer need to trade freedom for security or purpose for survival. We can build systems that liberate both. Our kids do not have to inherit that trade-off.
How meaning might actually be organized once work no longer does it is the subject of From Money to Meaning.
